On their recent UK run with the THE MENZINGERS we caught up with vocalist Dylan Slocum to discuss the band’s rise and what this new album means to them.ĭespite the love and praise the band are currently receiving, it’s certainly not something Dylan takes for granted. Now with the release of their latest album Brave Faces Everyone the band look set to take things even further. But when Slocum's voice swells to a roar on a song like "Generation Loss," the undeniable power grabs you by the collar and forces you to pay attention - and that's the difference between just being heard and truly being understood. When everything is loud and urgent, nothing is. If anything, they've emphasized the most important parts of it. "If you sing something loud enough and long enough," Slocum muses, "hopefully people can find some peace in it."Įxperimenting with more traditional song structures and less forward, biting moments hasn't dulled the band's sound. Sometimes it's as simple as a hopeful lyric or a rousing chorus that relieves tension in an otherwise heavyweight song, granting a brief respite that offers listeners a comforting melody to cling to. Ultimately, Spanish Love Songs try to break through this pessimism in every way possible. In the appropriately named "Optimism," Slocum sings, "Help me weather this high tide/But don't take me out back and shoot me," while the closing title track represents the album's central thesis: "We were never broken/Life's just very long." It has become a brave album, which shows that things are bad, but not hopeless. Expectations for "Brave Faces Everyone" were correspondingly high in 2020 - and the album was able to add even more facets to the band's unique sound and demeanor. ![]() "Source of big ideas, bigger riffs and the biggest possible feelings about love, war, fear and existential crises" cheered America's biggest radio station NPR. "Schmaltz," the acclaimed second album from Spanish Love Songs, raised the bar for emotional punk rock to an iconic level in 2018.
